Probiodrug AG was established in 1997 as a spin off of the Leibniz-Society Institute "Hans-Knöll-Institut für Wirkstoffforschung" in Jena.

Probiodrug`s core competency is drug development based on target evaluation. Targets are proteins, among them proteolytic enzymes such as the dipeptidyl peptidases. E.g., DP4 is an ubiquitous enzyme which plays a key role in gastrointestinal peptide hormone regulation and in immune response (CD26) providing new therapeutic targets for metabolic disorders including diabetes and obesity as well immune diseases. Modulation of other enzymes targets the treatment of neuronal disorders as dementia.

Based on the knowledge of pathophysiological mechanisms, specific and selective small molecules have been identified as lead compounds for a target-orientated, rational drug design.

Probiodrug has demonstrated a unique level of experience in designing chemical compounds as potential enzyme inhibitor-based drugs to treat several disorders. E.g., the pioneering work of Probiodrug has shown that inhibiting the proteolytic enzyme DP4 can revolutionize diabetes therapy. Today, the first drugs based on Probiodrug`s technologies have already reached the market.
