Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe is one of the biggest science and engineering research institutions in Europe (3,800 employees) and funded jointly by the Federal Republic of Germany and the State of Baden-Wuerttemberg.

Its research and development program is embedded in the superordinate program structure of the Hermann von Helmholtz Association of National Research Centers and concentrates on the five research areas of Structure of Matter, Earth and Environment, Health, Energy, and Key Technologies.

The Microsystem Technologies Program of the Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe covers:

-Electronic noses that reproduce the natural smelling process for the purpose of analysis and safety

-Micro Process Engineering for future chemical production in a shoebox

-Microoptics supplies technology for data transfer by light and serves as the basis of optical computers. And

-Protein Analysis and Microfluidics that allow for the production of complete analysis units on a single chip (lab-on-chip) for applications in life sciences.

The Nanotechnology Program focuses on the investigation of fundamental scientific issues on the atomic level with respect to economically useful innovative products and processes. Following the trend of miniaturization, activities in the field of Molecular Electronics are aimed at developing molecular-electronic components similar to conventional electronics.
