Profile

Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe is one of the biggest science and engineering research institutions in Europe (3,800 employees) and funded jointly by the Federal Republic of Germany and the State of Baden-Wuerttemberg.

Its research and development program is embedded in the superordinate program structure of the Hermann von Helmholtz Association of National Research Centers and concentrates on the five research areas of Structure of Matter, Earth and Environment, Health, Energy, and Key Technologies.

The focus of the Biomedical Research Program lies on the identification of genetic and non-genetic (environment, living conditions, etc.) causes of complex diseases. Presently, work concentrates on the development of cancer, the formation of cancer metastases, and the control of embryogenesis. DNA chip technology is developed and applied to determine gene profiles in cells. The proteomics age is started by investigating protein interactions using robot technology.

An online database of technologies offered will be available in 2006.

Transfer Manager in charge of Life Sciences is Ludwig Witter (ludwig.witter@map.fzk.de).
