The Berlin-Brandenburg Center for Regenerative Therapies (BCRT) located within Europe’s leading biotechnology region and an integral part of Europe’s largest university hospital, intends to:
- develop an internationally visible center of excellence in Regenerative Medicine with a focus on targeted cell differentiation for promoting endogenous tissue regeneration
- translate basic science discoveries into regenerative therapies
- share generated scientific knowledge in Regenerative Medicine with researchers, clinicians, and the public through educational activities, training, publications, and communication forums at national and international level.
They propose a highly interactive research program based on a consortium of internationally acknowledged experts in both basic and clinical science with a track record of successful scientific interaction demonstrated by numerous joint publications in high-ranking journals and joint network projects (DFG, BMBF, EU etc.).
The program will comprise work in five medical research fields linked to overlapping platforms on basic, bioengineering, and translational research. Initially, the Center will put particular emphasis on research and clinical programs related to musculoskeletal and immunological applications, since these aspects of regenerative medicine are most advanced at the Charité and they are closest to clinical translation. In addition, the Center will focus on regenerative therapies concerning the cardiovascular system, nervous system, and on liver-related applications.
The implementation of 1 Mio €/a flexible funds will allow performance- related budget allocation and support of international collaborations. The Charité will implement the BCRT as an independent, interdisciplinary organization. It will be located in a newly reconstructed building at the Charité Campus Virchow Clinic and will host 19 newly implemented research groups (12 junior groups), supplemented with established groups from the respective research fields. Together with the Technology Foundation Berlin a dedicated business development unit will collaborate with regional industry to facilitate translation. They already have an agreement with our first large-scale industrial partner, Schering AG.
