Therapeutic Candidate and Target for Treating AMDSummary
Identification of a new target (CD36) and several families of LEAD compounds (small molecules) for the treatment of Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD), including the wet AND dry forms.Organization name
UnivalorMontréal, Quebec, CanadaProfile
New Approach for Age-Related Macular Degeneration
Origin: Drs Huy Ong, William Lubell, Sylvain Chemtob, et al. from the Université de Montréal.
Indication: AMD
Field: Opthalmology
Molecule type: NCE - New Chemical Entity
Molecule 1: A family of unnatural azapeptide
MoA: Selective modulation of the CD36 receptor, preventing lipid accumulation
Highlights:
- Proof of principle completed - Binding studies demonstrating specificity towards CD36
- Proof of concept ex vivo: inhibition of angiogenesis in rat aortic ring model
- Proof of concept in vivo - Inhibition of choroidal neovascularisation using laser injury murine model
- The compounds are anti-angiogenic and they inhibit the development of choroidal neovascularisation in vivo in a CD36 dependent manner.
- The compounds selectively bind to CD36.
- The compounds inhibit in vitro vascular sprouting of aortic endothelium.
- The compounds inhibit choroidal neovascularisation in vivo as assessed using the model of laser injury induced neovascularisation.
- The compounds can be used to treat choroidal neovascularisation in age- related macular degeneration.
IP STATUS:
PCT, filed 2008/06; A novel class of azapeptide compounds.
Also, US provisional filed in 2008/02 (target for dry AMD).
