Lyophilized Plasma Storing systemSummary
Storage of lyophilized plasma at room temperatureOrganization name
IMG Innovations-Management GmbHProfile
In situations of a massive loss of blood, e.g. in a case of emergency or during surgeries, the top priority has to be given to the maintenance of the blood volume. Substitution of the loss of volume can be attained by crystalloid solutions (electrolyte-solutions) and colloidal solutions of natural (human albumine) or synthetic origin (dextran, gelatine, hydroxy ethyl starch) respectively. But the application of plasma preparations, e.g. frozen plasma, can be useful too. At this whole blood is centrifuged and the extracted plasma is quick-frozen and stored at -300C.
Frozen plasma is meant to be first choice in the case of a substitutional transfusion, and it can also be used advantageously as a compensation of great losses of blood. In praxis, however, the high costs of storage and the limited shelf life of frozen plasma resulted in the fact that today blood plasma is only rarely used as a substitute of volume.
Application
The underlying invention offers a solution to improve the preconditions of the use of blood plasma as a substitute or exchange of volume. For this blood plasma is lyophilized and stored in a sterile plastic bag unpermeable to vapor. If required, bloodplasma can be restored in a physiological concentration by addition of an adequate amount of sterile water.
Advantages
- Reduction of volume and weight of the conserved blood plasma by extraction of water
- Long shelf life and reduction of storage costs by keeping at room temperature
- Easy and safe preparation of the final product
- Technical documentation concerning the practicability is present
International patents have been filed. A license is offered by IMG.
