Product name
Porphyrin derivatives as photosensitizer in photodynamic therapySummary
Cyclo-keto-tetraphenylporphyrins are second generation photosensitizer for use in photodynamic therapy.Organization name
ipal GmbHProfile
These porphyrins are advantageous
- in their good producibility,
- in their relatively favourable solubility in organic as well as aqueous solutions and
- in their absorption beyond the absorption range of blood.
By suitable substitution of the functional groups and / or coupling to respective carrier molecules, the target specificity of the substances in the living organism can be enhanced. Some members of the mentioned molecule family demonstrated a triplett quantum yield of approx. 95% and a singulett oxygen quantum yield of approx. 90%, thus showing superiority to all presently known photosensitizers (usual quantum yields around 50%).
Benefits
- Better solubility than other photosensitizers in organic as well as aqueous solutions
- Surprisingly high singlet oxygen quantum yield of 0.9 promises high phototoxic efficacy
- Absorption wavelength is outside the range for blood
- Possibility for chemical coupling to suitable molecular carriers or possibility for substitution of the functional groups may allow target specificity
A European patent application has been filed.
The technology was developed at the Humboldt University (Berlin/Germany) and is offered by IPAL GmbH.
