Aim of the invention is the diminishment of delayed graft function in the first postoperative days. By a singular peri-operative application of the anti-IL6 receptor antibody a dramatical reduction of the serum creatinin concentration and recovery of primary kidney function was achieved. A higher serum creatinin level and thus an elevated IL6 level is a typical symptom after a transplant operation.

The main reason for delayed graft function is a high body weight difference between donor and recipient. Experimental data were obtained with a rat models. Serum creatinin concentrations were higher in animals which received a transplant from much heavier donors. The effect was not observed in animals treated with a 500 μg dosis of anti-IL6 receptor antibody.
