Name
Memogain - preclinical stage Alzheimer drug from Galantos Pharma
Organization name
Galantos Pharma GmbH
Profile
Galantos Pharma GmbH is a spin-off of Prof. Alfred Maelicke's Laboratory of Molecular Neurobiology at the Institute of Physiological Chemistry and Pathobiochemistry of the University of Mainz, Medical School, Germany. Additional scientific and technological input was provided by members of the scientific advisory board.
They are offering a worldwide license for memogain (nominated AD candidate in March 2008), which is protected under multiple international patent files (2005 and 2008), a US patent file (use and composition of matter) and international trademark applications.
The pro-drug memogain has the following properties:
- No pharmacological activity on AChE and AChRs (before cleavage)
- Very fast blood to brain delivery with a >15x improved brain to blood ratio over galantamine
- Fast cleavage of memogain to active compound galantamine in the brain
- Much reduced acute toxicity and adverse events in animal models
- Several times improved efficacy in multiple animal cognition models
The aim is an oral, once daily treatment with the effective dose, without uptitration or significant adverse events.
It is expected that clinical development and market approval of the pro-galantamine is fast (until 2010/11) and cost effective, as the pharmacologically active compound is approved since 2001 and most clinical data are available and applicable.
